Since Brexit ended free movement, French nationals wishing to work in the UK beyond a short visit now generally need a Skilled Worker visa requiring a SELT, alongside family visa applicants joining a partner or spouse already in the UK. French nationals with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme do not need a SELT.
French and English share a huge number of cognate words through shared Latin and Norman-French roots, which helps vocabulary recognition, but also creates well-known false friends, alongside pronunciation patterns that need targeted attention for the SELT's specific speaking format.
