For many new Skilled Worker applications made from 8 January 2026, the English requirement is B2. Transitional rules can apply to some people who held Skilled Worker permission before that date, so verify the current rule for your circumstances before booking an exam. In most cases this means passing a B2 SELT (ISE II from Trinity College London), covering all four skills: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing.
The UK Skilled Worker visa requires applicants to prove their English ability at B2 level. This applies to most applicants from non-English-speaking countries who do not meet an alternative requirement.
The most common way to meet this requirement is by passing a B2 SELT β specifically the ISE II (Integrated Skills in English Level II) from Trinity College London, which covers all four skills at B2 level.
Some applicants do not need to pass a B2 SELT. You may be exempt if:
Including the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica and others β the full list is on the UKVI website.
A degree taught and assessed in English from a recognised institution may exempt you.
If you passed an approved English test for a previous UK visa, you may not need to resit it.
Some roles in the Immigration Salary List or those sponsored under specific routes may have different requirements.
Trinity College London ISE II is one approved B2 SELT option that may be used where a Skilled Worker applicant needs a B2 SELT. It covers:
Reading comprehension tasks on factual and analytical texts at B2 level.
Written tasks including extended formal writing at B2 level.
Understanding spoken English at natural speed across a range of topics.
A structured speaking assessment with a trained Trinity examiner.
The B2 ISE II is more demanding than many applicants expect β particularly the Writing component, which requires structured, formal written responses at B2 level.
