B1 English Test for ILR: SELT Guide

What to know about the B1 speaking and listening requirement when preparing for Indefinite Leave to Remain.

Quick answer

  • Many ILR routes use a B1 speaking-and-listening English requirement, but immigration routes and exemptions differ.
  • Prepare for the communication skills the approved exam assesses: understanding questions, giving relevant answers, extending responses and communicating clearly.
  • Always confirm your exact route on GOV.UK before paying for an exam or preparation course.

What you need to know

The phrase B1 English test for ILR can hide an important distinction: the English level you need, the skills you must prove and the evidence accepted by UK Visas and Immigration depend on your application route and circumstances. Use this guide for preparation, then verify the current rule on GOV.UK before spending money on a test.

Where a SELT is required, the official exam must be taken through a Home Office-approved provider. Elite Language Solutions is a SELT preparation provider. We help candidates improve their English and prepare for the format and communication demands of their chosen approved exam; we do not issue SELT certificates or immigration decisions.

How to prepare effectively

Start with a diagnostic speaking and listening assessment. Then practise responding without a script, extending answers, understanding follow-up questions, using the grammar expected at your target CEFR level and making your pronunciation easy to understand. Preparation should be matched to the exact approved test you intend to take.

Not sure what to prepare for?

Tell us your target and current English level. We can assess your speaking, identify gaps and recommend a preparation plan. Always confirm the immigration requirement itself through official guidance.

2026 SELT status: check the route before you book

Important: the required CEFR level is determined by the immigration or nationality route and the application date. GOV.UK guidance was updated on 28 August 2026. For a number of settlement routes, rules now specify at least B1 speaking and listening before 26 March 2027 and at least B2 for applications on or after 26 March 2027. Always check the current GOV.UK rule for your exact route before paying for a test.

1. Confirm your route

Citizenship, settlement, partner/parent and work routes do not all use the same English requirement. Start with the route, not with the name of a test.

2. Confirm the required skills

Some routes assess speaking and listening; others require reading, writing, speaking and listening. Do not assume a B1 speaking test fits every B1 requirement.

3. Use an approved SELT

For a result to count as a SELT, the test, provider and test location must meet Home Office requirements. ELS prepares candidates; ELS does not issue official SELT certificates.
