Task 1 · C1 Advanced Reading and Use of English Part 1

Multiple-choice cloze: Why do we pay to be terrified?

Read the text and choose the answer (A, B, C or D) which best fits each gap. There is an example at the beginning (0).

Exam tip: Part 1 tests collocations, fixed phrases, phrasal verbs and fine differences in meaning. All four options may look possible, so check which one fits the words around the gap.
Task 2 · C1 Advanced Reading and Use of English Part 2

Open cloze: The Christmas ghost story

Think of the word which best fits each gap. Use only ONE word in each gap. There is an example at the beginning (0).

Exam tip: At C1, look out for dependent prepositions, parts of fixed expressions (by no means, rather than) and words that link clauses (what, which, whose).
Task 3 · C1 Advanced Reading and Use of English Part 4

Key word transformations

Complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the first sentence, using the word given. Do not change the word given. Use between three and six words, including the word given.

Exam tip: Contractions count as two words (hadn’t = had not). Check that your answer is grammatical with the words before and after the gap.
